The final film of stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is an elegy for the death of the Old West from writer Arthur Miller and director John Huston. Gable stars as Gay Langland, an aging hand traveling the byways and working at rodeos with his two comrades, Guido (Eli Wallach) and young Perce Howland (Montgomery Clift). The three men come up with a plan to corral some misfit mustangs and sell them for dog food, but Gay's new girlfriend Roslyn Taber (Marilyn Monroe), a high-minded ex-stripper who has just divorced her husband Ray (Kevin McCarthy) in Reno, is appalled by the plan. Although both Guido and Perce are also in love with Roslyn, she stands by Gay, sure that in the end he will do the right thing, even as he and his pals begin their planned roundup..

Chaque année, depuis des siècles, se déroule l'Océan de Feu, une course de survie de 5 000 km à travers le désert. Seuls peuvent s'y affronter les meilleurs chevaux arabes, issus des lignées les plus pures et les plus nobles, élevés par les plus grandes familles royales. En 1890, pour la première fois de l'Histoire, un sheik richissime invite un Américain et son cheval, Hidalgo, à participer à la course. Frank T. Hopkins, cow-boy et messager de la cavalerie américaine, est considéré comme le plus grand cavalier qu'ait connu l'Ouest américain. Le sheik désire opposer le cow-boy américain et son mustang aux plus grands chevaux arabes et aux meilleurs cavaliers bédouins. In the 1880s, horse courier and long distance horse racing champion Frank Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen) falls into a depression after witnessing the slaughter of Native Americans at Wounded Knee. Hiding from himself and others in Buffalo Bill's Wild West stunt show, Hopkins is summoned by an Arabian sheik (a majestic Omar Sharif) to come to the Middle-East and compete in the "Ocean of Fire;" a 3,000 mile horse race featuring competition from only the best steeds in the land, on a desert terrain that's unbeatable. Armed with his trusty horse Hidalgo, Hopkins agrees to the race, and begins the fight of his life trying to best the elements, his fellow riders, and a sheik who doesn't quite trust him.
