Label: Dreyfus 2008 | Contemporary Jazz | RAR 5% Rec.
|“||It takes a certain amount of bravery and confidence for a well-established artist to change course as radically as Aldo Romano has. More than four decades into his career as a respected powerhouse jazz drummer, the French-Italian Romano discovered his voice -- literally -- in 2006 when he released Chante, a stunning collection of alluring jazz-informed vocal chansons that redefined what this master musician was all about. Now, on February 5, 2008, Dreyfus Jazz will release etat de fait, which takes Aldo Romano's newly nurtured romance with this hitherto unexplored facet of his talent to a whole other level.||”|

Georges Brassens: L'intégrale... et plus encore (19CD)
XLD Rip | Flac+CUE+LOG | Covers | 19 CD | 4.5GB
Chanson Française | Philips | B00005NV8S | 2001 & other dates
|“||One of French pop's most poetic songwriters, Georges Brassens, was also a highly acclaimed and much-beloved performer in his own right. Not only a brilliant manipulator of language and a feted poet in his own right, Brassens was also renowned for his subversive streak, satirizing religion, class, social conformity, and moral hypocrisy with a wicked glee. Yet beneath that surface was a compassionate concern for his fellow man, particularly the disadvantaged and desperate. His personal politics were forged during the Nazi occupation, and while his views on freedom bordered on anarchism, his songs expressed those convictions more subtly than those of his contemporary, Léo Ferré. Though he was a skilled songwriter, Brassens had little formal musical training, and he generally kept things uncomplicated -- simple melodies and spare accompaniment from a bass and second guitar. Along with Jacques Brel, he became one of the most unique voices on the French cabaret circuit, and exerted a tremendous influence on many other singers and songwriters of the postwar era. His poetry and lyrics are still studied as part of France's standard educational curriculum.|
You will find here almost all Brassens' CDs: The official "Intégrale" (13 CD) plus 6 other important albums, live or with unpublished songs.

This box makes a nice alternative to the Philips boxes under Colin Davis. Not to take anything away from Davis. Universal has brought us a great compilation of some of Berlioz' best works from a variety of performers with different styles.
The jewel has to be Ozawa's unsurpassed Romeo and Juliet. This 1976 studio recording had its birth at the Tanglewood Festival and features excellent soloists (Julia Hamari, Jose Van Dam, and Jean Dupouy), a very competent choir, and of course the reliable Boston SO. The recording is of outstanding quality.
Barenboim's Damnaton is perdictably Furtwangler-like in tempo, and again features top notch singers in Fischer Dieskau, Jules Bastin, & Placido Domingo.
Levine directs a well recorded and balanced classical-sounding Requiem, and Abbado is more than competent in the Te Deum. Chung's Fantastique is fun and enjoyable.
In short, you can't go wrong for the price, and if you love Berlioz' Romeo, you've got to get this box just for the Ozawa gem. ~ amazon.com
