The first volume Legacy’s Miles Davis bootleg series offered audio and video evidence of his second great quintet playing the Newport Jazz Festival in Europe in 1967. Acclaim from critics and fans was universal. This second entry, Live in Europe 1969: Bootleg Series, Vol. 2, showcases almost an entirely different band -- only saxophonist Wayne Shorter remains. Bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and pianist Chick Corea made up Davis' road band, and other individuals participated in sessions for Filles de Kilimanjaro and In a Silent Way. These fire-breathing performances offer a band at fever pitch hearing and playing what they knew even then was a new chapter in jazz history.

Given the numerous times Miles Davis' official catalog has been issued, and the numerous live dates available, it's reasonable to question the necessity of a release with the subtitle Bootleg Series, Vol. 1.The answer, at least in this case, is a resounding "yes." This four-disc box -- three CDs and a DVD, capture Davis' second (and longest-lived) quintet at their creative pinnacle in 1967, playing five concerts in different European cities -- three on the CDs, two more on DVD. All of them were broadcasts from George Wein's Newport Jazz Festival in Europe. The concert tapes were licensed from the various nations' official broadcast archives. The CDs containing the Paris and Antwerp concerts have been bootlegged before -- though the Paris gig is finally complete here with the first two songs of the set added on -- and both feature better sound quality.

The explosive transformation of Miles Davis' “second great Quintet" with Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums) is laid bare on Miles Davis Quintet: Live in Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Volume 1. Culled from original state-owned television and radio sources in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and Sweden, the program spans five northern European festival performances over the course of nine days in October-November 1967. The audio shows consist entirely of previously unreleased or previously only bootlegged material.

This Horace Silver CD compilation is yet another in the series of unauthorized reissues by the European bootleg label Giants of Jazz. With a dozen selections taken from five separate sessions originally recorded by the pianist for Blue Note, it is a good cross section of his early dates as a leader, though the mediocre sound, with its unexpected channel shifts and dropouts, is extremely annoying.
