Watching The Doors Live at the Hollywood Bowl is a sobering experience, for the viewer must confront the painful truth that popular music, to judge by its increasingly infantile and banal state, will never see their like again. Either that, or admit the Doors were an irrelevant footnote in the history of pop--an idle thought that a few minutes of this extraordinary concert will dispel. Fortunately for posterity, this July 5, 1968 performance was captured by four cameras and recorded in 16-track audio, resulting in generally excellent stereo sound that is far better than most archive footage of this band.

The Doors supplied plenty of post-Independence Day fireworks on July 5, 1968 when the legendary quartet played the Hollywood Bowl, a concert that is considered to be the band s finest on film. For the first time, the film from the historic performance has been painstakingly restored using the original camera negatives and the audio has been remixed and mastered from original multi-tracks by the group s engineer Bruce Botnick. LIVE AT THE BOWL 68 includes three previously unreleased tracks from the performance. Technical issues with the recording of "Hello, I Love You," "The WASP (Texas Radio And The Big Beat), " and "Spanish Caravan" prevented them from being released in the past. Now, through meticulous restoration of the audio, all three will be included, marking the first time the concert has been available in its entirety.

Great Conductors of the 20th Century celebrates the so many superstar performers of the last century, conductors who collectively shaped the course of classical music.
Sixty volumes were planned with hopes for even more. Unfortunately it seems that only forty will be issued. Thus, rather than a proud celebration of the full wealth of this keystone of classical art, the truncated result is tinged with regret for what might have been.

Like most music lovers, during the years I amassed a large collection of Rolling Stones studio and concert albums. I bought audio tapes, CDs, VHS tapes and DVDs. One of the very first Blu-rays I added up to my collection was Jean-Luc Godard's Sympathy For The Devil (also containing One + One), featuring The Stones, which was released in France through local distributors Carlotta Films. I don't have a favorite album, though I prefer what The Stones did during late 60s and early 70s. Beggars Banquet (1968), Between the Buttons (1969), Get Her-Ya Ya's Out (1970), and Metamorphosis (1975) are amongst the albums that I always go back to when I am in a mood for some good old rock music. This said, despite the fact that in recent years The Stones have once again gathered momentum, I think that their time has passed.

Bob Dylan - From Newport to the Ancient, Empty Streets in LA (1965)

In the span of exactly 365 days, from his July 26, 1964, appearance at the famed Newport Folk Festival to his return on July 25, 1965, Bob Dylan rocketed from folk luminary to lightning rod. After first abandoning the protest themes of his classic early anthems to focus on more poetic, personal subjects, Dylan next forsook the rigid traditions of roots music to go electric, drawing on the spirit of rock & roll to forge a revolutionary and controversial sound all his own. The must-have bootleg release From Newport to the Ancient Empty Streets in LA compiles the majority of the two Newport gigs, and the contrast is extraordinary: while the 1964 audience treats sublime, introspective songs like "To Ramona" and "All I Really Want to Do" with reverence and awe, the 1965 crowd seems poised on the brink of anarchy, and regardless of whether the catalyst was the elemental ferocity of the music, the inadequate sound system, or the brevity of the three-song set, the tension is palpable, and it elevates Dylan and his band to remarkable heights. Dandelion's two-disc set also features the entirety of a September 3, 1965, show at Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, another legendary date, pairing Dylan with guitarist Robbie Robertson, drummer Levon Helm, keyboardist Al Kooper, and bassist Harvey Brooks. While lacking the primal force of his subsequent electric tour with the Hawks, the performance is nevertheless excellent, capturing the complexity and potency of songs like "Tombstone Blues," "Maggie's Farm," and "Like a Rolling Stone" in full. Complete with soundboard-quality fidelity, From Newport to the Ancient Empty Streets in LA is a near-definitive edition of this essential material. – Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
