This is in short a really good recording. Gerdes' handling of the opera is very good (though his tempo in the Pilgrims' Chorus theme of the Overture is almost disturbingly fast), the orchestra is well controlled and very expressive. Birgit Nilsson, one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos of the 20th Century, sings the two principle female roles - Venus and Elisabeth; Wolfgang Windgassen, who sings the role of Tannhauser, is one of the greatest Wagnerian tenors of the century. And Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who sings Wolfram, is virtually undisputed as THE baritone of the century.Highly recommend this recording.

Wether you love Wagner operas or just his orchestal music or even if you are new to Wagner's music, this is the definitive orchestal recording to have. This 2 CD set contains 157 minutes of the best orchestal Wagner ever available. The Philharmonia Orchestra under the batoon of Otto Klemperer plays perfect, the tempi is slow but not boring, in fact with a lot of feeling and the sound is amazing. The Siegfried Idyll is played with small amount of instruments, just as Wagner intended it to be played.

Beethoven was inspired to write the "Coriolan Overture" by a drama by the Austrian H.J. von Collin. Wagner wrote the music for Logengrin between 1846 and 1848; the work was then accepted for performance by the Dresden Opera House. The overture and the first act ballet music from the opera "Wilhelm Tell" by Gioacchino Rossini are still very popular today. With his two operas "A Life for the Czar" and "Ruslan and Ludmilla"; Glinka created the national movement in Russian music.

Richard Wagner was one of history's greatest composers, a theater artist of extraordinary genius and vision, and one of the most controversial characters in the entire pantheon of Western art. As a composer, he rewrote the rules for opera—reenvisioning its musical forms and creating dazzling and unforgettable dramatic tapestries that melded orchestral magnificence with the soaring beauty of the human voice. As a theater artist, he pioneered the "Gesamtkunstwerk" or "total artwork" that incorporated music, drama, poetry, philosophy, myth, and ritual, building a theater of revolutionary design and creating musical dramas on a scale never before attempted in history. And, as a self-styled theorist, he pursued an agenda of militant German nationalism, anti-Semitism, elitist prejudice, and unbounded self-glorification in his often troubling philosophical tracts and essays.

The ten symphonies of Louis Spohr span a period of forty-six years which saw music move from the Classical dominance of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven to the Romantic era of Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner. Spohr himself was an important link in this development, through his exploitation of chromatic harmony, his formal experiments and his four programmatic symphonies. When Spohr composed his first symphony in 1811, Beethoven still had to write his seventh, eighth and ninth, but by the time of Spohr’s final one in 1857 the entire symphonic output of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Schumann had come and gone, and all three of these composers were dead.

Die Feen was Wagner's first completed opera, but remained unperformed in his lifetime. It has never established itself firmly in the operatic repertory although it receives occasional performances, on stage or in concert, most often in Germany. Additionally, the overture has an independent life as an orchestral piece.

Richard Wagner - Orchestral Music from the Operas (Rienzi, Tannhauser, Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg,

When these discs were originally released singly in the early '80s, they were not only marvelous recordings of the purely orchestral music from Wagner's operas, they announced the arrival of a marvelous new conductor. At the time, Klaus Tennstedt was known only as the conductor of several astonishingly good recordings of Mahler's symphonies, but his abilities in the standard repertoire were as yet unknown. But with these two discs of recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic, Tennstedt proved that his Mahler was no accident. Indeed, so strong, so central, and so overwhelmingly compelling are his Wagner recordings that his Mahler recordings seem almost accidental. In the disc of excerpts from the Ring operas, Tennstedt is at once immensely dramatic, ecstatically lyrical, and profoundly musical. In the disc of preludes and overtures from Tannhäuser, Rienzi, Lohengrin, and Meistersinger, Tennstedt is at once intensely concentrated, widely expansive, and deeply human. Aided by the super-virtuoso playing of the Berlin Philharmonic and the stupendous impact of EMI's early digital, Tennstedt's Wagner was as fine or finer than any of his contemporaries and nearly in the same league as his predecessors.

Deutsche Grammophon continues its successful relationship with the acclaimed Cleveland Orchestra and its chief conductor Franz Welser-Most with this thrilling all-Wagner album. The release of this album will tie in with Franz Welser-Most picking up the baton as General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. The Clevelanders deliver Lohengrin Prelude (Act I and Act III), The Ride of the Valkyries, the Rienzi and Meistersinger Overture, and the orchestral version of opera's non plus ultra of love's power to transfigure, the Liebestod, from Tristan und Isolde. The impact of soprano Measha Brueggergosman's Wesendonck Lieder, was, said The Plain Dealer "as if she'd penned them herself Tracking Brueggergosman's every move from fierce declamation down to the faintest whisper, Welser-Most and crew nudge the singer's performance into the musical heavens."
