Rated 4.5 out of 5 star by AllMusic Guide

At first glance this collaboration should not have worked. The Duke Ellington and Count Basie Orchestras had already been competitors for 25 years but the leaders' mutual admiration (Ellington was one of Basie's main idols) and some brilliant planning made this a very successful and surprisingly uncrowded encounter. On most selections Ellington and Basie both play piano (their interaction with each other is wonderful) and the arrangements allowed the stars from both bands to take turns soloing. "Segue in C" is the highpoint but versions of "Until I Met You," "Battle Royal" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside" are not far behind.

The 1999 reissue of this album marks a total reconstruction and rethinking of the original LP, and such a complete break from the original album that its story could fill a book. Such Sweet Thunder was originally announced as a stereo and mono release, but only showed up in mono thanks to the technical problems inherent in early stereo in creating a concert-like ambience in which the performance seemed continuous. ~ AllMusic

This set came about, in part, as a result of Ellington's signing to Frank Sinatra's Reprise label in November 1962, with the ending of his exclusive contract to Columbia. Six numbers from the three Paris dates were initially edited and released by Reprise as part of the ten-song Duke Ellington's Greatest Hits, but the bulk of the performances from those shows didn't surface until many years later as The Great Paris Concert on two LPs. ~ AllMusic

One of Duke Ellington's finest small group sessions from his final decade was this frequently exciting quartet date with guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Louie Bellson. Ellington's percussive style always sounded modern and he comes up with consistently strong solos on such numbers as "Love You Madly," "The Hawk Talks" and especially "Cotton Tail," easily keeping up with his younger sidemen. Highly recommended. ~ AllMusic

Obviously put together with a great deal of love, both by director Gary Keys and Ruth Ellington Boatwright (Duke Ellington’s sister, who for 23 years after his death celebrated Duke’s birthday with a gathering of family, friends, and musicians each year), Duke Ellington: Reminiscing In Tempo, released by MVDvisual on March 22, 2011, stands out among music DVDs. A musician who was told by his parents ever since he was a child that he was special and blessed, during a time of racial discrimination as he was growing up in Washington, D.C., Duke Ellington became well-known and moved his mother and sister to live with him in New York City, where he was so over-protective of Ruth that he never let her go out at night or have a social life.

These performances are taken from three separate Paris concerts over two days in early 1965, nearly everything from the final show is present. This gives the listener an opportunity to hear a program as Ellington paced it, without the annoying fade-outs and odd transitions that might be added by another producer. The sound quality throughout this two-CD set is excellent.
